Larry Whitener

Larry Whitener, age 78, of Mooresboro, went home to be with the Lord, Sunday, May 8, 2022 at Accordius Health in Rutherfordton.

Larry was born Wednesday, July 21, 1943 in Rutherford County to the late Elbert Whitener and Mattie Louise Fowler Whitener. He was a graduate of R-S Central High School and worked for Cone Mills for forty-three years. Larry was a lifetime member of Gantt’s Grove Baptist Church where he served as church treasurer for over thirty years and as a deacon. He loved the Lord and his church family. Larry was a dedicated husband and father. He enjoyed taking trips to the mountains and the beach with his daughter, Tammy.  Larry was known for his sense of humor. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife for thirty-six years, Mattie Sue Whitener; sister, Sarah Jeanette Crook and a brother, Melvin Whitener, Sr.

Left to cherish fond memories include his loving daughter, Tammy Whitener (Bill) of Forest City; his beloved cat, Boo Boo; sister-in-law, Judy Whitener of Forest City, brother-in-law, Joe Bennett of Mooresboro; nieces, Shelley Owens (Robert) of Rutherfordton, Crystal Walker (Jeff) of Forest City, Pam Elliott (Tim) of Mooresboro, Freida Caldwell (Scott) of Mooresboro and Sheila Miller (Lynn) of Mooresboro; nephews, Scott McKinney (Renee) of Mooresboro, Roger Street of Mooresboro, Joel Crook of Jacksonville, NC, Steve Crook of Inman, SC and Mark Patty of Mooresboro.

The funeral service will be conducted at 3:00 pm on Saturday, May 14, 2022 at Gantt’s Grove Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service time at the church.
