Sarah Powell Edmiston, age 100, of Cocoa, Florida formerly of Polk County, NC, passed away October 28, 2020 at her residence.

Sarah was born February 24, 1920 in Transylvania County, NC to the late Reverend Hubert L. Powell and Margaret Hague Powell. She was a graduate of Hickory High School, class of 1937 and held a bachelor’s degree from Lenoir-Rhyne University and an earned master’s degree from NOVA University. Sarah was an elementary school teacher for thirty-one years and was selected as Teacher of the Year twice during her tenure. She was an active member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Melbourne, Florida. During her years in North Carolina she faithfully attended Alexander United Methodist Church in Forest City and Lebanon United Methodist Church in Polk County. She enjoyed teaching Sunday School and fellowshipping with her church family. Sarah was a past Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star and enjoyed painting landscapes and writing poetry. She published a book of her favorite original poems to be a blessing to others.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-seven years, John Victor Edmiston, Sr.; three sisters, Mary Ellen Coleman, Margaret Sims, Martha Elizabeth Coston and three brothers, Hubert Powell, Jr., Reverend John James Powell and Loren Powell.

Those left to cherish her memory include daughters, Sarah E. Oliver (Bob) of Cocoa, Florida, Martha Jordan of Forest City, Louise Wyss and Mary Hansma (Jack) all of Mill Spring; sons, John V. Edmiston (Tina) of Melbourne, FL and Robert Edmiston (Linda) of Palm Shores, FL; sister-in-law, Billie Jo Powell of Troutman, NC; twenty grandchildren, thirty-three great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

A private funeral service will be conducted at the Harrelson Funeral Chapel with Reverend James Lee Powell and Reverend Ned Owens officiating. Interment will follow at Cleveland Memorial Park. The family requests that masks be worn by all attendees and that social distancing be observed.
